Biography
Armand Pierre Fernandez, known as Arman (Nice, November 17, 1928 - New York, October 22, 2005) was a French painter and sculptor.
He studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Nice, where he met Yves Klein, and then at the Ecole du Louvre. He was a member of the New Realism.
The first paintings were made by Arman until the early 50's as traditional paintings, but soon after this period he experiments a detachment from the traditional painting and he creates artworks applying "stamps" on paper, or Cachets replicated almost obsessively and, later, tracks and footprints: the Allures.
In the early 60's the artistic style of Arman undergoes a change again, he puts destroyed objects in his works. Among the leading exponents of New Realism, artistic movement that represents the man through everyday objects (shoes, watches, phones, etc…) his particular realizations turn to express the gear consumerism, through the accumulation of identical items placed on the canvas in a geometric way, with order and elegance. Since the intersection between the canvas and the objects, Arman is considered a sculptor and painter. He himself will set perfectly by presenting itself as "un peintre qui fait de la sculpture."
